Glasgow Climate Change Conclave: New Religion

Gaia

What about tomorrow’s 26th Climate Change summit in Glasgow? Polluter India has rejected the proposed “encyclical.” China- and Russia-polluting leaders won’t even attend. But the conclave is real for President Biden.

Today’s elite is largely secular. Unlike religion’s collection of beliefs, morals, and stories, science is knowledge of natural phenomena and human behavior, proved or disproved through analysis and evidence.

But science leaves a hole in our soul. We long for force beyond what we see. And while environmentalism is based upon science, it believes we care for Earth, we love it or we die.

So “climate change” is the “it” religion. Environmentalism, in fact, worships an actual god  — Gaia, the Greek mother goddess who personifies Earth.

Following World War II’s horrors and the post-war nuclear terror of “mutual assured destruction,” intellectuals sought answers beyond religion. “Ban the Bomb” disarmament, the anti-nuclear testing movement, promised salvation through political action. And activists did help bring about 1963’s Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Yet Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1962) about corporations killing plant, animal life, and people, America’s misguided crusade in Vietnam, a thundering population explosion triggering “Zero Population Growth” and the fight for legal abortion— all edged environmentalism toward a new religion.

Then 1988 yielded the hottest summer on record. Environmentalists realized global warming could be their needed planetary crisis. In 1989, the UN established its Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and in 1992, the first UN Earth Summit took place in Rio de Janeiro.

In Rio, conference organizer Maurice Strong made it clear he wanted global warming action to overturn the existing capitalist order. Strong told the assembled, “We may get to the point where the only way of saving the world will be for industrialized civilization to collapse. Isn’t it our responsibility to bring this about?”

Four years later, ex-USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev recognized climate alarmism could advance socialist Marxist objectives. He said, “The threat of environmental crisis will be the international disaster key to unlock the New World Order.”

The UN’s Kyoto Protocol of 1997 targeted reducing greenhouse gases by 2012 to 5% below 1990 levels. Canadian Environmental Minister Christine Stewart told Calgary Herald editors, “No matter if the science of global warming is all phony…climate change [provides] the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world.”

Future Canadian prime minister Steven Harper, then in opposition, recognized Kyoto’s threat to business. Harper wrote:

Kyoto is essentially a socialist scheme to suck money out of wealth-producing nations. Implementing Kyoto will cripple the oil and gas industry, which is essential to [us]. Workers and consumers everywhere in Canada will lose. THERE ARE NO CANADIAN WINNERS UNDER THE KYOTO ACCORD.

In 2005, a progressive British think tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research, exposed global warming’s crisis talk, writing:

[Climate change] is typified by an inflated or extreme lexicon, incorporating an urgent tone and cinematic codes. It employs [a] quasi-religious register of death and doom, and it uses language of acceleration and irreversibility. [emphasis added]

Now President Biden is off to Glasgow. The White House sent along its “Roadmap to Build a Climate-Resilient Economy” [PDF], identifying as climate change disasters:

  • floods
  • drying river beds
  • sea-level rise
  • wildfires
  • storms and hurricanes

Scientist, check the facts:

Floods; dry river beds. The UN’s most recent IPCC report, issued this summer, found “low confidence” that humans influence global river flows or that climate change causes floods.

Sea-level rise. the IPCC report only deals with climate change’s physical impact, avoiding predictable human response. Before rising sea levels displace 187 million people, “drowning” Miami in 80 years, humans will adapt, as historic Holland did. Current models already reduce the flooded population number 12,000-fold.

Wildfires. In reality, 75% of California forest fires since 1983 have been due to bad forest management, only 25% might relate to temperature gains. And historically, U.S. fires are 5 to 10 times less frequent today than they were in 1900, when fire was widely used.

Hurricanes (storms). Ex-Obama Administration energy undersecretary for science Steven Koonin writes in his book Unsettled that “science as summarized in UN and US government reports actually says that hurricanes show no detectable sign of human influence.” [emphasis added]
